Original FZ game sprite preview + a little info, Rod the Red

Okay so here is a preview of some of the sprites from an upcoming original FreakZone game, Rod the Red. This game was designed years ago so I'm so glad to finally be able to make it.

I must be getting good at spriting because I'm so pleased with these, they look exactly how the concept art did.

The game having been previously kept under wraps, is a comedy-oddness styled platformer. Think Earthworm Jim meets Spongebob Squarepants meets Ren and Stimpy.

The characters on the sheet so far are, Rod himself, the Hairdo Crew(who deliver Pizza) and a boss, The Sadistic Face, which is an overly exaggerated gore fest(it attacks you by making it's eyes fall out on you or bleeding all over you and such, the joke is in how pathetically gross it is).

The Hairdo Crew will look familiar to old time FreakZone fans (or 'FreakZonites' as you were once called ).

These sprites will probably be copyrighted or something I dunno, you guys can use them if making sprite comics or referring to them, but I'd prefer if they weren't used in any games for now, especially the sadistic face sprite. If you do use any of these in a comic or as an avatar or anything just put a little mention of where it's from somewhere if you could. These are just for your viewing pleasure now, and to get that little bit of FZ excitement/nostalgia going in those of you who remembered the good old days.

I love that style! Reminds me of a game I played once for the sega.

Remember that one time that the FZ game that was similar to pong, gave me the Win95 CIH Virus? I have a good memory.

No seriously, I remember that little froggy looking hairdo crew thing, it had its own game once, it used to be the mascot character.

Thanks! Heh. I'm still shocked at how well the Sadistic Face came out. I didn't think I could sprite that well. It's like, exactly the same as the concept art we did. He's gonna be making pieces of meat and spleens fall out of the sky and such, haha.

It was in a book I saw when I was about 5 years old, and I was absolutely horrified by it, lol, then at college I found the same book, and showed a friend who is now helping to design this game, and I was saying how sadistic it was to have such images in a book which kids would look at, lol, so it donned the nickname, "The Sadistic Face".

My intention is to get every single one of you laughing so hard that you can't concentrate on the controls, lol, that is if you can appreciate the odd, twisted sense of humour it will have.

Yeah that was Freddie the Frog. In fact, Freddie will be re-released in it's un-altered form when the site is back up, and a more stylish, grown up remake of it is in the works, with the title "Froggia".

Yeah that Pong game was "Hyperball". Sadly I've lost the .cca file of that one. I thought it was awesome though, even though I do say so myself, lol.

I remember them now. Ahhh, those were the days.

Totally. Sadly 2 out of the 3 original 'FZ members' (i.e. people I designed the games with in school) have gone off to universities in different places, that includes the man behind the original concept for Rod the Red, but I have the phone numbers to make sure they get to play the games, lol. I still have my game designing abilities and I've donned two new 'members' recently who are both awesome.

Oh well, I used to be a member of all those olden places, FZ before it disappeared, Biebersoft before it went wierd, even places like the Click Cafe.

And in all my years, i've completed a grand total of 2, maybe 3 games. Yay! I still have the same mascot character though.

Anyway, the graphics are great, especially the sadistic head and facial expressions on Rod.

Heh, they remind me of the graphics I used to see on my old Amiga... that's not an insult, by the way. I loved the Amiga's graphics.

Thanks Krit. Well I'll remember that and give you an oldbie badge when the FZ 2005 site is up (some of the Biebersoft games will be returning too, since Jordan gave me his games and rights to do what I want with them when he quit fan gaming and host them with the FZ logo).

...If I can manage to do one of those badge system things, lol, if not it'll be a custom title.
