You can add backgrounds if you want. I'd say those are walls. A good idea would be to do a Google image search for backdrops and kinda blur 'em up for background effect. But you don't have to do this or even color the bgs yourself if you choose.

As for TD's colors, ask around. Someone should have his sprite somewhere.
