I'd recommend the pencil tool] I used the magic wand to select the desired area, grab the Polygonal Lasso Tool set to remove selected areas, get rid of part of the edge(the side depends on your light source or whatever), Use the Burn Tool (set to Midtones) and burn near where I removed with the Lasso Tool. When burning whites, I have the burn tool set to shadows. Rinse and repeat. (I did this in Photshop 7 BTW, but it might be possible with other programs if they have the right tools.)
