The technique described in the patent, could suggest a machine that externally pulses ultrasound at target areas of your brain, orchestrating sensory combinations which encompass anything your senses can experience. This means sights, sounds, tastes and even smells! Bet that sewer section in Resident Evil 4 doesn't look too appealing right now...

This sounds super coolio awesome.

But just before you get too excited:
QUOTE
Experts have stated that the ultrasound method described in Sony's Patent is entirely plausible, though Sony Electronics spokesperson Elizabeth Boukis, has been quick to comment that the work is purely speculative. "There were not any experiments done," she says. "This particular patent was a prophetic invention. It was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

This is not the PS3. Currently the technology is nowhere near existing as anything but a vague whisper of an (admittedly super coolio awesome) idea.

Yeah, I'm fine with the kinds of games we have now, the last thing I want to be doing is smelling them.
