Yeah, but it all comes down to achievements in things like the Oscars, and LOTR achieved in many many aspects, ranging from technological achievements, to acting, to sound, to music. It wasn't based on a personal bias.

Things like this WILL be though. What if Pretendo or KPP was to come in and show everyone a BRILLIANT and original piece of art? People wouldn't vote for it because they simply don't like them. However, if you're well liked and you show a single average piece of art (not saying anyones IS, just an example), then you will get yourself a few votes.

It seems to be less of a "Who's best?" and more of a "Who deserves what" a lot of the time too.

If it were only possible to get a whole bunch of "outside observers" who have nothing to do with the MFGG community come and watch us for a while, then vote. We might get some more accurate results for some of the categories.

Well that's my point, You'd say "pretendo doesn't deserve this because he's a flamer and annoying", thus making you vote for something which may be in fact be a lesser but more popular piece of art, or game, or music, or review or whatever.

Well I'd advise people just to vote for whoever they want but try and use good judgment, remember this is anonymous so you don't have to vote for your friend for a particular category, and win or lose don't let the thing affect you either way. These are just the opinions of others, not a measure of your true skill, you might not win an award you completely deserved, or you might win an award that would have been better awarded to someone else, but either way, it does not change certain facts of the universe.

Also, some categories can be easily researched. Like reviews, just go to the site and look for things like how well they articulated their points, how long and balanced the review was, how fair the points were. Don't base it on how many they've submitted, it doesn't hurt to do a little research to reach a fair vote.

Just bringing up an old post, the reason I wanna do nominees is to people might say "Hmm, maybe this guy IS a better choice". I've seen a lot of votes which made me go "OH that guy should have gotten more votes". See what I mean?

Fair enough, but I still think I know the winners of most of these categories. I knew them before people started voting, but i'll have to wait to see if i'm right or not. I really DO hope some people think very very carefully before voting, but I just can't see it happening that way unfortunately. dry.gif

That's precisly what I was doing.
In fact I was torn in a few but I chose one not because of preference.

If KPP were to show something spectacular, it would be assumed that he had stolen it. Nobody can grow THAT quickly in terms of talent. I'm not saying that because I hate him either. I'm being honest.

I understand Kritter's point of view. We place too much emphasis on popularity rather than work.

Here's an example, a few days ago, I saw Razor-Blade's avatar, some character named "Cless" apparently. To be honest, I know nothing about Razor-Blade, he has 1500-some posts, but I don't know the first thing about him. Nevertheless, I saw his cape-flowing sprite, and I was blown away.

What Kritter is saying, is that people might say things like, "I never heard of this guy, so I am not going to vote for him."

Some topics, I have no clue who to vote for, so I'd probably just vote for someone I know. I mean, let's face it, I suck with TGF, so it is very hard for me to judge who has done good work with it. It's just too hard. I do have some programming experience, but really the only thing I can really judge are sprites.

There's another problem with this.

Votings done, everyone sees, and someone can't remember all the people, so they choose whoever they can remember for... let's say... best artist.

Person 1: See? I voted for Klobber.
Person 2: Klobber? Ohhh, SHOOT! I forgot about him! I voted for Joey!
Person 1: Joey? Ohhh, CRAP! I forgot about HIM!
Person 2: Aw, man, can I change my vote?
Person 1: Me too!
Person 3: I forgot about them! Can I change my vote?
Person 4: Me too!

*insert chaotic confusion here*

Just an example.

Thing is, I trust in the good nature of the majority of MFGGers here.
No one is gonna do that.
