Shadowman, you won something like "best admin" once because you were more popular, but you do a terrible job at it. That's my point, you don't win things because you're good at them here, you win because you're better known for it than others may be. Even if I won something like "best MFGGer" I wouldn't accept it because I don't believe these awards have any real basis as to how good you actually are at what you get nominated for. It's like I said, and I stick by it, there are a lot of people who will have been forgotten because they are not as popular as others, which is why you stuck the "unsung hero" option in there, but you don't really care about those. You care about things like "best MFGGer" or "Best artist" because those are the things people can feel proud about. No one gives a crap about the lesser known people or product in something like this. I feel the winners should feel ashamed that they may be taking away an award from someone who actually DOES deserve it.

Ok, changing all your ballot entries to Mr Happy Pants, like a promised.

But how do we really know whether or not someone does deserve the award? For example, someone might try to help out as much as they can because they expect something out of it yet we don't know of the intention. Does that person deserve it, Kritter?

Just wait and see who actually wins these "awards". And Shadowman, you can do whatever childish act you like to whatever I win, I don't care. I won't accept any awards on the basis that someone else or no one deserves it. Some awards should be equally shared amongst a whole bunch of people, such as best artist. It's like comparing abstract to landscape art, both brilliant in their own right, but so different that you can't choose a favorite. Take a gander in the art forum and tell me how many different styles you see. All different, yet all great in their own way.

They're not chosing favorites, darnit... just skill. And who cares if it's overshadowed, LOTR overshadowed everything. Did the other nominees whine?

We've been over that already Parakarry, you can't compare that to this. Why don't you take a few steps back and check out the other pages before you slide in and leave your mark.

Best Artist:
Fanguy
Duckboy
Klobber
Jet
Toni

I'm sorry, but skill is not the sole factor.

To be honest, i've only actually seen one piece of art by Toni, so I fail to see how he made it to that list. The majority of his stuff is sprites, and that's not really art. At least, not in the sense this award was for.

It's ALL about opinion. You may think that some nominations are dishonest and they don't deserve the award, Kritter, but that's your own opinion. But in the end, it's a majority vote that decides the victor. Who cares if the nominations may or may not be dishonest? I personally think that it's interesting to see what somebody thinks of me.

We all know the awards don't necessarily reflect truth. Can't we just have fun with it?

The majority of people contributing to these awards have taken it 100% seriously, so I will too. Had it been cald the Corn Awards of Greatness awarded to the Tribe of Silly People at MFGG for 2004, I could see the "fun" side of it, but I don't see many people treating it as a fun little competition. SPRITE competitions are fun competitions, labelling me or anyone else as "OMFG YOU'RE SERIOUS" and saying that's a BAD thing, that's taking it seriously.

For the record, I see EXACTLY where Kritter is coming from and I think some other people should too. Particularly with the artist thing, that's kinda hard to judge because there are so many different styles. I like Jhonen Vasquez's style, but I hate people who constantly imitate it. Art is weird like that. Art's always in the eye of the beholder, so truth be told there can never be a "best" artist.

Two people could draw something to represent an emotion such as love. One person might use all sorts of colors, draw photorealistically, and make a jaw-dropping piece of art. Another person could spend 5 minutes on a drawing and convey it better. So in that way it's hard to choose.

If I spent three years drawing an orange to represent love, and made the orange the most perfect orange you ever did see, and then a 5 year old came along and drew two stick figures holding hands with rainbows in the background, he would've conveyed the art better than I did. Even though the orange might be so realistic you could taste it.

Anyway, that's just with art. My point is I believe there are some categories where you cannot be the best in, by the very nature of the topic in question.

The awards can be fine, if used in the right way. I can see that, to a degree. I'm not going to go the "they might win and not deserve it" route, I'm going to go the "What if everyone deserves it?" There wouldn't be a right for one person to hold such a title.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. Don't think I'm losing sleep over this. Also, don't think that if I DO win any awards I'm going to even aknowledge winning them. I don't mean that to seem unthankful (and I'm not saying I did win anything, I'm just using myself as an example). Anything I personally win, if indeed I did win anything, will be kept to the topic and not bragged about the forum, I'd recommend everyone who wins any category does the same thing. Winning an award is all well and good, but don't act like an asshole, and remember that these awards mean nothing compared to what you do. You know what you're capable of, if someone wins an award and you think you deserved it more, then damn it, you probably do deserve it more.

So yeah. Awards, all well and good, but just don't take them seriously, and remember that the awards process itself is flawed like everything else in this world of ours.

No need to cry over it is there, if you get an award you've obviously done something right along the line and there isn't anything wrong with appreciating that. Your points might count if you didn't act the same way over every subject brought up. Try looking to do something other than prove how wrong something is.
I'm not gonna lose sleep if I don't win something I think I deserve because of someone more popular, so why are you getting worked up over the chance of this happening to people.

Jealousy in the air with that SM comment =P.

To settle the argument, majority vote doesn't magically give awards and titles to people who deserve it. Look at George Bush.

No one ever said it did but winners are decided by majorite vote. And by the way, whether someone deserves something or not is an opinion not fact. You may think that one person doesn't deserve the award or position they have but other people disagree with you.

I was just using the orange as an example, feel free to replace orange with anything else. My point is it's not just how you draw but what you draw and why you drew it, and there are so many ways you can't really choose the best.
