A demo mod just came out for Doom 3 called 5.56mm Full Metal Jacket. I expected it to be some run-of-the-mill level mod.
I was floored.

5.56mm is a tactics shooter Doom 3 mod. Kind of like Counterstrike or Ghost Recon. I haven't had the chance to play it online yet, but it lacks an incredible visual punch. HDR lighting isn't working to its fullest yet because the team had some problems porting it to version 1.3.

Desert_delta_night. The ambient sound effects are perfect; it feels like it's nighttime.

The same map, but at daytime. Bright sun = shorter viewing distance

SOVIETS. Note that there's no lighting in this scene, but everything is still barely lit by ambient lighting (something that Doom 3 didn't/couldn't do).

This stage made my piss myself, if only because you can hear the plane fly over your head at the start of the stage.

I'm going to try the core game out how; hopefully the gameplay will keep up with the visuals.

The third shot looks like a complete and total ripoff of the Docks level from Desert Combat to me. But then, that's me.

Well I just played this online. This is the most tension/excitement I've had in a game in a long time, except when people camp (but then again, what can you do about that). It's a team deathmatch game with no significant engine changes (yet). It's the environments that really make the game. Doom 3's lighting engine/HDR lighting is uses very very well. For example, on the Delta Night stage, I hid in the shadow of the East's flag. I was completely and totally black, and no one could spot me. I took the opportunity to make a headshot, but the bright light of the gunfire gave my location away.
It also had extremely cool bullet ballistics. The shots are affected by gravity, and headshots are always one-hit kills. The automatics (assault rifles and SMGs) are also pretty inaccurate, leading to some very cool cinematic gunfights. The sound also helps give it the cinematic feeling: the correct impact sounds are made by bullets. If it hit a metal shipping crate, you would hear a nice big metal CLANG. And randomly, bullets will shoot off the walls and make a ricochet sound. Imagine what it sounds like when 5 people are in a firefight in a city. soveryhappy.gif

So yeah, incredibly awesome.

This looks good but unlike CS to Half-Life Doom didn't rely on this mod to be known. :p I am going to download this and by the time I get around to playing this if this topic is still in site in the GC I'll say what I think about it. Also if anyone else was having the problem I was (the site wasn't working for the download) I used here.
