Yeah, kinda stupid.

People in those days weren't very bright; education was ****ty. Therefore, since "ed" is stuck on most words, the great majority of folks who couldn't read or right would have used "hanged", making it commonplace and eventually accepted as standard English.

This is how most of the words in English that aren't foreign came into being
