| QUOTE (BlazeShad @ Jul 17 2005, 12:03 PM) | | Everyone says "graphics like that would mean horrible FPS". Think about it, this is the next gen of systems, look at the PS1 to PS2 jump. AMAZING graphics increase, yet now, to achieve better graphics then what is being made is damn near impossible so instead they improve the speed of the system and factor in everything for high graphics. As in, maybe a box in a game for Xbox was dull looking and you couldn't do anything with it besides walk into. Well, now, they have a lot of speed and a lot more room, where like HL2 everything can be interactable, maybe you can push the box a bit, chip off peices, shoot through it, tip it over etc. etc. Infact what was being said by a maker of Ghost Recon 3 is that they now have enough power as the computer always had there is basically "a lot less limits" so basically he is saying games don't have to have non interactable objects to save FPS. Look at screens from Ghost Recon 3, they just look like smoother Xbox graphics but there is sooo much in the environment. If you really doubt these games working without an awful FPS you are narrowminded. I can run Half-Life 2 with full settings on everything, no lag. Only looooooooong loading times, so maybe that is what you can expect, long loading times. They aren't just going to throw out new systems without improvements. |
See; the problem you're discussing is the ideology Nintendo has set forth on.
With more processing power, yes you have the ability to do all those things... but so far do we have jerseys that rip and tear realistically? Is the next-gen Madden going to offer physics where a harder tackle means more turf flying? Nope!
How about Killzone 2; is it gonna have ricocheting bullets that splinter blood and shrapnel across each character's face? *raises finger* *puts it back down* nope.
This is the problem; more power doesn't mean better artists, and such doesn't equal a BETTER GAME. Your graphics will only be as good as the artists working on them, your physics will only be as good as the programmers who designed them. In the end, you're going to find out that not everyone is Nintendo, nor is everyone Valve.
But it will take you a few months to realize this.

So basically you think besides Valve and Nintendo that there is nothing else? I've never seen an elite Nintendo game with a great engine, really, I've seen really good but not great (great being HL2). Put it this way, I like army, Valve and Ubisoft can cover that and they can cover it better then anyone else out there right now. So I have nothing to worry about. Neither of those two have ever failed to impress me (well, RBS3 had that bad co-op copy, didn't impress me much).
Also, Epic, making Gears of War with the new UT engine, if you think they can't accomplish amazing physics...lets just say you are wrong.
It will be the exact same bad companies will produce bad games and good create good. Not like it is just going to completely change. I don't see exactly what you mean but I sort of do.
Lastly for the Killzone 2 remark, well, in CS: Source, you shoot someone, they have a splat on them or they could have say a bloody arm. It isn't too tough do do things like that, to come about doing things like that they just need an a lot bigger staff.

Err; yeah a blood splat isn't that hard to do, I remember having stuff like that in Goldeneye... you know that was nine years ago? Maybe developers don't have to go very far to impress you afterall pal In fact, I can think of a literal crap ton of FPS titles that have blood splats on walls -and- on the player, as well as dismemberment... - Jedi Knight II or III - Soldier of Fortune II - even Quake III mods like Navy Seals have this - Time Splitters - Perfect Dark - Duke Nukem 3D had wall splats and spraying blood - Wolfenstein Enemy Territory - Half Life The list goes on and on, many of these games show their age otherwise... but if you're gonna get excited about something that simple, maybe you shouldn't be concerned about what system you buy; these are widely available games on older systems and the PC. Not only is something like a blood splat "not that difficult", it's something that has been a standard in FPSes for a long time now yo. And if all it takes is little tricks like that to impress you, again maybe this is why you don't see what I'm talking about. It's like you said, good companies can make good games and the bad companies will not improve, but make no mistake that "good" developers are a more and more rare commodity as development costs rise, and the difficulty of producing a game at what should be the "modern complexity" increases. You're going to find more and more then only big names can keep up without external funding, and that talent will be overshadowed by mainstream purchasing power; buying into the theory that you can survive on an Xbox 360 with three whole games, two of which will be Halo and the other Perfect Dark Zero. What the hell man, what the hell.
