Well I think people make the mistake of believing the Revolution controller is going to be totally unconventional, but the point to make there is simple... if you read all the interviews concerning the controller in quick succession and take notes; you come out with the following bullet points
- Revolution controller has to be fun (Miyamoto) - Revolution controller will attract all sorts of people and not just gamers (Iwata) - Revolution controller will be unique, and also, not intimidating to non-gamers (Iwata) - Revolution controller will be easy to steal (Miyamoto) - Revolution itself has to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, games should be fun (all Nintendo) - Revolution controller will suit NES->GCN games (Reggie) - Revolution will not use a touch pad (Iwata)
So, the Revolution will not be controlled by a watered down DS, there is no touch screen. The controller has to attract people into playing it, without it looking like something nerdy that no one would want to do (Nintendo On is out of the question, as are gyroscopic controls). Only a simple, button-laden controller could play all those classics... and if it will be easy to steal, it must be existing technology just used in a different way.
You're looking at something between the ease of use of the SNES, the precision of the GCN, the "cool factor" of a mainstream product, and the simplicity of a baby's toy. I believe the controller will be able to play just as many games as any Nintendo controller ever could
