I think that it's mainly because Hollywood seems intent on taking every originally scary movie from Asia or something and then remake it into something that's more flashy, but much less scary.
To be honest, I don't find movies where there's an insane murder killing everyone that scary. Entertaining maybe, but not scary... Except the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which I haven't even seen completely and it freaks me out. I think psychological scary movies and things where it's otherwordly, unreal things that are slowly killing everyone are much more freaky.
Not that I'm a huge fan of horror movies, but hey...
