Because two different versions have a dog that I like and I can't afford to buy more than one. -------------------- Apologies for the nostalgia.

From what I've read of people's "experience," this is certainly possible in the Japanese version at least. I'm not 100% certain, but I'll return with some evidence.

Thought I'd post this to keep your hopes up though.

Here's someone else's sentiments on the same matter, but of course it's just a GameFAQs post, so nothing substantial yet:

Plus I'd hope on common logic that they'd allow you to unlock all dogs. If not, then the only way to get ALL of them would be finding friends with the other versions a la Pokémon and somehow "swapping," which I don't think bodes too well since you'd virtually be trading and swapping dogs rather than fictional creatures.

From all that I've gathered, the different versions just have unique "paths" of unlocking, meaning certain versions will get certain dogs before other trainers.
