From what I've read of people's "experience," this is certainly possible in the Japanese version at least. I'm not 100% certain, but I'll return with some evidence.
Thought I'd post this to keep your hopes up though.
Here's someone else's sentiments on the same matter, but of course it's just a GameFAQs post, so nothing substantial yet:
