According to the Japanese Game Boy "micro" site..., The old Gameboy processor is in there?

| QUOTE | | CPU : 32bit RISC-CPU + 8bit CISC-CPU |
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/050818b.htmlThe 8bit CISC-CPU is what allows the SP to play old GB/GBC games, and according to "dmgice" of Gamesarefun.com, it is not used for GBA games. So why would they include an old processor if they explicitly state on their websites and in e-mails that it isn't backwards compatible? Here's dmgice's theories: | QUOTE | | 1. Using GBC games may be possible, but GB games may be blocked somehow due to the power they drain. |
I can't properly address this one, but it doesn't sound like a possible issue. Someone with more knowledge of Gameboy games feel free to prove me wrong.
| QUOTE | | 2. Nintendo is lying about it not being backwards compatible to avoid dealing with addressing any weird compatability errors. (Or the fact that GB/GBC games would slice that 10 hour battery life nearly in half.) |
I agree with the avoiding compatibility errors statement, since perhaps it may not be as encompassing as SP's GB/GBC support. Again he mentions extreme battery drain, does anyone know why he would think older games would drain more battery?
| QUOTE | | 3. They intend to introduce an "adaptor" to play older games, or re-release older games as a way of filling out 2006. Kind of like "Well, you bought Link's Awakening and Link's Awakening DX, why not buy a GBA version with enhanced graphics?" |
For this one, I'll just say "God I hope not."

Yeah but adding it at the last minute is

| QUOTE (Kaepora Revolution @ Aug 20 2005, 12:33 PM) | | Isn't this the same case with the DS? I may be mistaken. |
From Wikipedia:
| QUOTE | | due to a slightly different form factor and its lack of the Z80 like processor used in these systems. |
The processor it refers to is the 8bit CISC-CPU, so we know the DS doesn't have that chip, and it is able to play GBA games just fine. This means the Micro has it for a reason...
| QUOTE | | Here's my theory: It's a mistake, the GBM doesn't play old GB games in any way, they just copy-pasted the GBA specs and forgot to edit that bit. |
This is probably the most likely of the theories so far, and the least favorable. We can only hope that this is not the case. EDIT: Citrusponge's theory may be less and less likely, as the specifications on the actual designated page for specs and not a news post still contain the 8-bit processor. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/micro/hardware/spec/EDIT 2: The CNET specs only list the 32-bit processor... | QUOTE | Processor Type Sharp ARM7TDMI
Data Width 32 bit
Instruction set RISC |
But on the bright side, their GBASP lists the same thing, so there's still hope on that front.
