QUOTE (Kaepora Revolution @ Aug 23 2005, 09:35 PM)
I'm not stating it, I'm saying that it's a possibility. If the Revolution controller would play Gamecube games, as most people are stating, then what's the point of having Gamecube controller slots? You seem like you don't even think it's a possibility.

Wait, I specifically remember Reggie saying in an interview something along the lines of "Think about what kind of controller would be able to play older games". SOMEONE said that anyway, I just need to find the quote. That would seem to imply that the Revolution's controller is capable of playing all those older games.

Let's try adding to the discussion like even those of us who were making "snide remarks" were, Greliz. I challenge you! biggrin.gif

There's not so much a discussion going on here as it is a pissing match between multiple parties with a few levelheaded interjections strewn about. There is no discussion worth adding to, because it all boils down to "maybe it'll do this or this or this or this" and all that does it build up your hopes more and more and they'll all come toppling down like a house of cards when they reveal the controller and it's nothing like you hoped it would be. Then you'll get angry at Nintendo and take up drinking and drive to Miyamoto's house in the middle of the night and throw empty liquor bottles at it. Then you'll go home and sob and watch Oprah.

That's exactly why they're there I think. Honestly. sad.gif

Seems like it to me too. Usually they might have thrown it to the wind in favor of the "all-encompassing" Revolution controller, but considering the amount of accessories the GCN had that some people actually WANT to use (Bongo Drums, GCN to GBA link, Mario Party microphone, possibly even the dance pad) it seems like the right move. Plus, these are accessories that people just threw down money for, it would be a shame to lose their usage so soon. It's an additional shame that it doesn't seem the old accessories will be recognized, (light guns, ROB, Mario Paint mouse) but of course they could always surprise me on that front.

Yes, Reggie said that in an interview.

But I don't have a link.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Iwata stated the Revolution will be able to use Gamecube controllers. All of the older games, can work with the GCN controller.

It's not that way by design; lez everyone shut up and read Nightwing's posts OK:

Remember what Reggie said about the Revolution controller; he said that:

QUOTE
As to your second point, a handful of other readers asked the same question. I suppose it could always turn out that the GameCube controller will in fact be able to play NES, S-NES and N64 games on Revolution, but I don't think so. Asked specifically about the Revolution controller at E3 2005, Nintendo of America's vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, responded: "We announced the ability to download and play the best NES games, S-NES games, N64 games, in addition to Revolution games and GameCube games. If you put those controllers all lined up together, they're all very different. So think about what kind of device is going to allow you to play all those different types of games. It's pretty interesting."

In other words the Revolution controller is designed to play all the old games; but do not let this confuse you. They also have stated outright that this controller may have a more simple design with fewer buttons, pads, and sticks so that it is not so intimidating to the new market they're trying to attract.

We only know what they tell us; there is no correct answer thus far, but you can bet your bottom dollar the standard Revolution controller is going to play the old games one way or another; but just for the record, seeing as it is NOT GOING TO BE MOTION SENSOR OR GYROSCOPIC WITH MAYO the Nintendo Revolution is not going to piss on Super Mario Bros by requiring you to throw up and catch the controller to jump.

They said they were tossing the idea around of getting rid of the D-Pad on the new Revo controller, right? And if they're tossing that idea around, they may get rid of a few other functions and replace them with other functions, correct? So, older games might not use these new functions or are not easy to handle with this new controller setup, correct? And the Gamecube controller is basically every controller we've so far seen put into one, with the same easy-to-use functions, CORRECT?

Maybe the Gamecube controller ports are used so people can play old games without having to get used to the new controller setup for those games.

More concisely:

- Revolution controller will play all the old games
- No word on if GCN controller will hold same function
- GCN controller ports/accessories are supported to ensure full backwards compatibility with GCN games that are so close to Revolution's release (Zelda, Donkey Konga, DDR, Mario Party etc.)

That pretty much sums everything up. I lose.

It's still a possibility; there's just no word yet. What Nintendo has to do to make Revolution look its strongest is ensure the fullest enjoyment of their total library. This means peripherals have to work, games have to be compatible, batteries shouldn't die for weeks, system should be quiet, everything should be cheap and fast as hell. So far we've seen that Nintendo is committed to that, low cost downloads for old games (including some free ones of course), and these games will be playable on the stock controller. It's a great setup, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the GCN controller be used for things other than GCN games, just as far as ease of use is concerned. But we just don't know yet

I'm pretty sure that the Rev Controller won't be any gimmicky thing that people are afraid of, like "EXTREEEEEEEME Rumble" that throws you across your room.
As for Gyroscopic controls, they might be used, but you're not forced to use them for NES games. As Nintendo wants "old" gamers from the first generation to buy a Rev, they want to give them the "classic" feeling they had when actually playing NES.
The GameCube ports are easy to explain:
Bongo's, GBA-GC link, Microphone, Dance Mat, and GCN controllers to have GCN games played like they were always played.

I think Nintendo won't disappoint us. They know what they're doing. They want to attract "new gamers" AND "core gamers", so the controller won't be too simple, but also not too complicated.
I'm sure that we will get the Revolution we want, whatever it is.
