Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi are delivery boys for Mr. E's pizza delivery service. They must deliver pizza to Toad before time runs out!
Things to take note of:
Speed - Actual character speed
Strength - How high up you can throw the pizza and how many hits it takes to defeat ground-bound enemies
Jump - How high said character can jump
Yoshi is the fastest, has an intermediate jump, but is the weakest character. Mario is the strongest character, but is the slowest and has the weakest jump. Luigi has the best jump of all, but has intermediate speed and throwing abilities.
Additionally, ground-bound enemies or jumping enemies can be killed. Flying enemies must be avoided. A good way to keep the pizza away from flying enemies is to throw it into the air as your character is dashing. Keep in mind that if the pizza touches the ground or if the enemies get the pizza, you lose. You have to alley-oop it into the warp pipe at the end of the stage to win!
Your score at the end of the stage is determined by how many enemies you've killed total and however much time is remaining plus a 1000 point bonus for making it to the goal. Try to collect as many coins as possible as they replenish your time.

Since it has to have a "dark" theme in that sense, I'll try to add ghost and castle levels. |
How does that relate to dark, zombies or Halloween at all?

Yeah, I admit the title's a bit misleading, but he did say it didn't necessarily have to be a nighttime game, but the scenarios had to be at least dark, which relates to things like caves, castles, outer space, black holes, and the like. The nighttime thing was just to get some ideas going I suppose.
But yeah, as long as it's not all daytime or sunny and crap as per usual in Mario games, then it's alright.

The "scary/Halloween" stuff is implied, but not part of the actual guidelines. It only has to be dark (and in a literal sense, not dark as in depressing or morbid, if that's what's confusing people). A Halloween game is perfectly fine, as long as it follows those guidelines.
