I know NES songs are made with two square instruments, a triangle, and two percussion noises. But my instruments don't sound like their NES counterparts. For example, my triangle sound has the triangle sound, but in the NSFs I listen to, there seems to be a second note playing alongside every triangle note, that's much much higher than the base note. Also, there's all these effects you're supposed to put on them; virtuosos, arpeggios, vibratos, etc, to achieve the right sound.

And quite frankly I'm pretty lost.

What should I do? Where are the most flawless instruments and what are the effects I need to do?

Hmm..
In Acmlm Boards there was an application that would allow to Compose SPCs, NSFs, and many others and later on patch them into the game..
The author of the program could know. Else, ask Richard Bannister.
