Actually from what I remember, the game would be divided in sections, and would star different characters throughout the game.

Mostly because Earthbound sucked enormous amounts of ass. That's why they had to import them from other planets to meet the demand, and how Giygas snuck onto one of the ships and took over the game to try to make it better. But still, given the evolution of gaming nowadays I'm sure this game might not be as terrible as Earthbound was.
