To be blunt: there's nothing.

You can just connect to each other and play online, there's no form of chatting whatsoever.

It's a shame, but not a terrible loss.

Oh really? No boards of any sort?! I thought when they got WiFi PictoChat would go online, but I was wrong... PictoChat is useless! (You can just talk to the person you're chatting with in the same room...)

PictoChat's hilarious fun, and I wouldn't be too sure that Nintendo won't reimplement the code into a new online game.

In fact, Animal Crossing may already have a better, online version of PictoChat.

And SMG, why would you argue it? It's been confirmed that it's gone from several sources now. The only source that said it remained was a poorly translated Spanish article (that I believed for a little bit).

They'll probably let you use your character as an avatar in Animal Crossing: Wild World... yeah, PictoChat's cool, but I think it would be more fun if you could actually speak to the person you're Karting with.

I hate "voice chat," but VoIP (voice over IP) has been demoed at E3, so it's possible and Nintendo is showing interest in implementing it into a future title.

Ah, well you said fact when that was just my opinion so I was confused.

I didn't mean literally "talk." I meant, rather, between Kart matches you could do a little taunting and such via PictoChat-like chatting. It seems shallow to just find a username and say "Cool! This guy sounds like he could race well!" Despite my disappointment, I'm far from not buying it. This game is too fun looking to not puchase.

Well, unfortunately, Nintendo seems to be dead set on making it so most games you'll only be able to communicate with friends if there is a communication system. While I do like the idea of not being "bothered" by random strangers, there's no chance to establish new relationships over the game either.

You have a point about the "random stangers" thing. That would be obnoxious...

Well there's always Teamspeak and the like, which offer a greater quality sound and mic volume anyways.. It would suck to have to pull the system closer to you or talk louder than comftorble since the DS microphone isn't all that sensitive, plus it doesn't seem to record at a high quality so computer program is the best choice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset that the technology isn't there. And I'm aware that there are alternatives as well (in fact I even mentioned Teamspeak in another topic about the same thing, maybe even this thread on an earlier page).

But you're definitely right about the microphone, about the quality and its range. Perhaps this means if games do implement VoIP in the future that Nintendo will have to sell a full-on headset similar to XBOX Live.
