I made this list a couple months back in my DJ. Since this subject usually gives me SO MUCH FURY, I'm going to avoid all debate and just post what I think for the time being, hoping somebody gets enlightenment from it.
Here's my ideal character list for SSB3. In making it, I'm adhering to a few strict rules:
1// Keep all characters from SSB and SSBM. Love or hate Pichu, Marth, whomever--they won't go away. If characters were disposable, Jigglypuff would not have seen screentime in SSBM because she was so bad in the first one; yet they bring her back (and improve her), so I doubt HAL would be rid of any other characters.
2// At least fifty characters total, with multiple characters per franchise wherever possible.
3// NINTENDO CHARACTERS ONLY. No Sonic or Tails. No Goku or Vegeta. No Banjo or Conker (or Rare characters in general with the exception of those which Nintendo has made canon to their universe, such as Krystal, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, etc).
So here's the list of available characters from SSBM:
Super Mario Bros.:
1// Mario 2// Luigi 3// Princess Peach 4// Bowser 5// Dr. Mario
Legend of Zelda:
6// Link 7// Zelda/Sheik 8// Ganondorf 9// Young Link
StarFox:
10// Fox McCloud 11// Falco Lombardi
Pokémon:
12// Pikachu 13// Jigglypuff 14// Mewtwo 15// Pichu
Fire Emblem:
16// Marth 17// Roy
Other:
18// Yoshi 19// Donkey Kong 20// Captain Falcon 21// Samus Aran 22// Ness 23// Ice Climbers 24// Kirby 25// Mr. Game & Watch
Starting with the Legend of Zelda series (since I have no clue where to begin with Mario), only two characters should really be added: Captain Tetra, aka Zelda the Fourth, who would be a great speedy melee fighter (no pun intended) and an original version of Ganondorf based off his dual sword style from Wind Waker. Tetra would NOT transform into Zelda, unlike Zelda and Sheik. while Ganondorf as he is was badass if only because he is Ganondorf, the whole "slow-ass Captain Falcon clone" thing was a real rip, especially because he never uses his awesome sword outside his victory taunt. Maybe they should consider adding Vaati in his Minish form, too, just for the sake of more villains. Young Link should likewise get the Wind Waker makeover. "Ganon" could make an appearance as a non-playable boss character similar to Giga Bowser.
Legend of Zelda:
1// Link 2// Zelda/Sheik 3// Ganondorf (WindWaker) 4// Captain Tetra 5// Young Link (WindWaker) 6// Minish Vaati
NPC Boss: Ganon
Next, the StarFox series: with a cast of characters that was initially large, then shrunk down to the size of a pea for StarFox Adventures, then expanded again for StarFox Assault, there are a few prime SF characters to pick from. First on the list is Krystal, whose expertise with the staff could make her a melee-centric fighter, unlike Fox and Falco. Then Wolf O'Donnell could fill in the roll of playable franchise villain, whose raw speed could rival Captain Falcon's and Fox's. His specialty could be the wide range of weapons found in StarFox Assault. Andross could replace Master Hand and Crazy Hand, where you have to take out both hands and then beat up his head in order to obtain victory.
StarFox:
7// Fox McCloud 8// Falco Lombardi 9// Krystal 10// Wolf O'Donnell
NPC Boss: Andross
Okay. Finally getting onto Super Mario Bros., the most important addition to the Mushroom Kingdom's roster must be Wario; with a ratio of 4:1 when it comes to good vs. evil, throwing Wario into the mix would slightly balance out with Bowser. Clearly a heavyweight brawler, Wario could throw his weight around and use his various transformations to stay alive in the battlefield. Following Wario should be Cackletta and Fawful; both lightweights with a lot of tricks on their sleeves, their specialty would be distance attacks that prove difficult to avoid (unless you're a master Reflector). Giga Bowser would return as the NPC Boss. Waluigi and Daisy are tough out of luck here.
Super Mario Bros.:
11// Mario 12// Luigi 13// Princess Peach 14// Bowser 15// Dr. Mario 16// Wario 17// Cackletta 18// Fawful
NPC Boss: Giga Bowser
The hardest franchise to decide for is easily Pokémon; in a roster of 386 total, with only FOUR of which put into the game, it's easy to go nuts picking legendaries or generic, lame 'Mons to fill up Smash Space. So to keep things sane, here's a few choice guys that actually make sense: first, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee, the ORIGINAL fighting type Pokémon. Both melee fighters, clearly, with the advantage of speed and elemental damage. Scizor, acting much like Captain Falcon and Wolf with a high-power, high-speed combo that could devistate in the hands of the right player. Tyranitar, a bruiser with strength at a distance and in close range combat. And lastly Deoxys, a sort of foil for Mewtwo, speedier but not as devastating. I suppose Munchlax could be thrown in there for comedic value. Rayquaza could act as the NPC Boss, towering over other characters and attacking with a harsh combination of Flying, Fire, Dragon and Ground attacks.
19// Pikachu 20// Jigglypuff 21// Mewtwo 22// Pichu 23// Hitmonchan 24// Hitmonlee 25// Scizor 26// Tyranitar 27// Deoxys 28// Munchlax
NPC Boss: Rayquaza
the Kirby franchise. One of the many in SSBM with only one representative--Kirby himself. From this, the two obvious expansions are King Dedede--a Kirby clone unable to copy powers, but is heavier and hits harder--and Metaknight, the swordsman puffball (because after four serious swordsmen, one that looks like Kirby in a mask and has bat wings = sexy.) Metaknight's skills would clearly be melee and speed based. Kirby staples Whispy Woods, Kracko and Paint Roller could all be NPC bosses; Whispy Woods is immune to regular attacks, so players must throw the apples he drops at him. Kracko is just fast and hard to hit, the *****, and Paint Roller could flood the screen with baddies while you try to attack him.
29// Kirby 30// King Dedede 31// Metaknight
NPC Bosses: Whispy Woods, Kracko, Paint Roller
Next, the Metroid franchise has as much potential for new members as StarFox; first and foremost, Ridley is a MUST, a fearsome combination of range, melee and power. Dark Samus could likewise appear in it, as a Samus clone with greater power but less speed. (The reason I chose Dark Samus over the SA-X is because the SA-X looks EXACTLY like Samus in her original outfit and there is nothing differentiating her from the real Samus other than the fact that she's got no soul.) Metroid and Super Metroid bosses Kraid and Mother Brain could act as great NPC bosses, especially Kraid; his background appearance in SSBM's Brinstar Depths was neat, but didn't do quite enough justice.
32// Samus 33// Ridley 34// Dark Samus
NPC Bosses: Mother Brain, Kraid
DK! Donkey Kong! (HUH!) DK! Donkey Kong is here! One of the more challenging franchises to figure out, Donkey Kong just doesn't have a wide array of combat characters. Diddy Kong could act as a fast, weak DK clone, while King K. Rool could throw his crown into the ring and muscle his way through with the toughest of them. The only thing is that I can't think of a good NPC boss, since I haven't played many DK games myself. Maybe KAOS from DKC3? Who knows.

F-Zero has gotten a lot of attention recently, what with a GBA game, a GameCube game, an arcade game and an anime all within the past year and a half. This once-obscure Nintendo franchise started on the SNES and sparked an awesome, hairband-rocking sequel for the N64. Captain Falcon's inclusion in SSB brought some popularity to the racing title and for SSBM he got promoted from the status of secret character to one of the starting fourteen characters, having two levels of his own--F-Zero levels Big Blue and Mute City. Similar to Pokémon, F-Zero's cast of characters is enormous (41 large, to be exact, including Falcon himself) and more than just a few are evil. First up would be Samurai Goroh, Falcon's main arch-rival, a porker of a swordsman who could clash steel with Link and the others or throw his muscle around similar to Wario. Then would be Black Shadow, whose evil, supernatural powers and large build would make for a better Falcon clone than Ganondorf. And to balance out the forces of good and evil, Phoenix--the final new racer added to F-Zero canon by Sega--could light up the scene with his even-farther-into-the-future-than-Falcon powahh. Unfortunately, F-Zero has a lack of supersized boss villains...but maybe racer #00 Deathborn could supersize himself to bring some devastation down on the heroes and villains on the Smash Bros. field.
38// Captain Falcon 39// Samurai Goroh 40// Black Shadow 41// Phoenix
NPC Boss: Deathborn
Next on the chopping block is the Earthbound franchise...a Nintendo-made RPG series all but neglected since the days of the SNES, excluding the Smash Bros. games (due to Earthbound 2 being cancelled in the US back when the N64 was starting to flounder). I admit--I don't know much about EB because I never got too far in it, I kept dying early on and got too frustrated to keep playing it. But from what I've heard from Greliz, here's my list: first would be Prince Poo, because his name is hilarious. He could be a Ness clone or focus more on melee attacks or whatever. Then would be second party member Jeff, a techno whiz who would definitely be a unique character. And I guess Paula, cuz...well, there need to be more female characters, even if they are the stereotypical "girls fight with frying pans because they're only good for cooking and popping out babies >:E" kind. Finally, one of the many versions of Starman (not to be confused with the power-ups from Super Mario Bros., or the Megaman characters of the same name) could fill the roll of playable villain, while Giygas or Psycho Tent (is that what it's called?) could be the NPC bosses.
42// Ness 43// Poo 44// Jeff 45// Paula 46// Starman
NPC Bosses: Giygas, Psycho Tent
Lastly, before going into all the single-character stuff, the Yoshi franchise...another toughie, because most of the Yoshi franchise's characters are other Yoshis. The Baby characters--Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Bowser--don't get any loving here because they are technically Mario characters and we don't need any more of them. So Yoshi remains the only character to his franchise, though he has plenty of large enemies to choose from as an NPC boss--most likely Raphael the Raven, who has seen the most popularity after Yoshi's Island released.

NPC Boss: Raphael the Raven
Alongside the returning Ice Climbers and Mr. Game & Watch, the long-anticipated ajoinment of Pitt would round off the cast of obscure characters nicely with his strong range powers and superior jumping skills. Lastly, the Ray Mk II, the main robot body from Nintendo's Pokémon-like Custom Robo series would likewise prove interesting.
48// Ice Climbers 49// Mr. Game & Watch 50// Pitt 51// Ray Mk. II
That's all for now.
