Creepy PS3 rumor.

PlayStation 3s won't play borrowed, used, or rented games?

With their DRM practices in music CDs, there's a chance that gamers would have to "buy a new copy of each PS3 game, theoretically meaning bigger sales to help defray the steep cost of next-gen development. It would also remove the PS3 from the used-game trade, a market from which Sony gets no revenue."

In other words, you would have to authenticate your own games with your own console. You would therefore have to use your own bought games and not like rented games or anything.

I know it sounds dumb and creepy, but gamespot says Sony definately has the technology.
And you have to wonder how many people rent games, too.

Well if this is the case, Sony will just lose one hell of a lot of business. A lot of people like to rent games first, BEFORE they go and buy the game, and if they can't do that, they may not buy as many games as they were going to before.

I wonder if the games will place bootlegs on your PS3 too?

I totally agree with Black Squirrel.

About 20% of my PS2/Gamecube games I've bought after renting them.

I'm now into buying previously owned GC games, so that would be a big problem for Sony if they made this with PS3.

Next step will be that Eye Toy sends the movies to Sony so that they can see if you REALLY only play your own games...

Well, this totally eliminate's trading my games with friends.. because we totally know our way with games..

I always tell my brother: "no! don't buy this game. Our cousin has the same and you can borrow it"
Mostly this is because my cousin and my brother don't play that much and therefore I have a lot of games:
My cousin buys a game
My brother borrows said game
My cousin never wants it back
My brother stops playing it
The game is mine

I got half of "my" games like this.

Well, "yeah right" CAN be perceived as sarcasm, but most of us knew where you were coming from anyway, so you're still good.

As for the PS3 only letting you play games you actually bought, if that's true, it makes me glad that I'm a Nintendo boy.

The trackers they put on the CDs are there because the CDs are made and distributed by Sony. A random PS3 game by a third-party like... say, MGS4, wouldn't have it because it isn't being developed/distributed by Sony. It's possibly that games from SCEA might have them, but those guys are good in marketing and know that rentals account for a big chunk of game profits.

Don't they have to pay a royalty to get licensed, in addition to abiding by certain "standards?"

And even if they don't have to now, if Sony implemented something like this they would surely make a similar procedure.
