QUOTE (The Associated Press)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Forget the fancy toy: The box it comes in can be much more fun. Spaceship, castle, haven to daydream in, the cardboard box was enshrined Friday in the National Toy Hall of Fame along with Jack-in-the-Box and Candy Land.

No kidding, grown-ups.

"I think every adult has had that disillusioning experience of picking what they think is a wonderful toy for a child, and then finding the kid playing with the box," said Christopher Bensch, chief curator of the Strong Museum. "It's that empty box full of possibilities that the kids can sense and the adults don't always see."

Low-tech and unpretentious it may be, but the cardboard box has fostered learning and creativity for multiple generations - a key qualifier for inclusion in the museum's seven-year-old hall of fame. And its appeal as a plaything or recreational backdrop is universal.

Truly deserving. I found myself playing with boxes all of the time when I was young.

Edit: Heck, I even had names for my boxes. >_>

I pretended that long thin boxes were Bazookas, and I often put a bunch of typewriters and calculators in big ones and pretended that it was a submarine.

Ooooh! Now I remember some of the awesome stuff I used to do with cardboard boxes. I used to put to together and sit inside, and pretend it was a car or spaceship or time-machine, and draw controls and stuff on the inside. It sucked when I could no longer fit inside :/

Here's what it looked like:

Yes. Boxes definately deserve it. They're just great, and even better with those little white bits of packaging (You know, the ones you can dive in if you have a HUGE box full of them).

Almost all children prefer the boxes to what's in them. No matter what's in the box, how expensive it is, or how bad the box is.

Boxes must be awesome for a kid sad.gif

Sometimes when I was younger I used to do things like hide inside boxes or roll around in them. Those things were fun =D

When compared to today's stupid-unbreakable-plastic-stuff packaging, you gotta love the box.

(Little do the citizens know that when mild mannered Clark Kent enters this "telephone booth"...)

Oh man. About time. Amazing how long it took for the world to realize that people actually like cardboard boxes.

I remember putting boxes over my cats and watching them shove the boxes all over the place. I need to do that again.

I agree, boxes were the greatest things ever. Especially really big ones like refridgerator boxes. That coupled with a ballpoint pen and I was all set.

Awesome, best news I've heard in ages, brings a tear to my eye.

I used to do all sorts of stuff with boxes when I was younger. Theres a photograph of me from when I was like 3 or something, with a box over my body and my head, hands and feet showing... I was pretending to be a robot! biggrin.gif

I cut countless boxes up to make mock TV sets in them and make my own imaginery shows with my favourite characters! I also remember when I got a toy fire truck that actually spraed water. I built an imaginery town out of boxes and set fire to one of the bigger boxes and use my fire truck to put it out! laugh3.gif

Ah so many happy childhood memoeries..... smile.gif
