Some good points, and for a common joe end consumer you're right

But if you're dealing with other members of a fangaming community, there should at least be some sense of "okay, you tried, you stumbled where everyone else stumbled - now try again", instead of "you suck at life go away".

The average game consumer has been for the past decade at the very least, someone who does not consider video games their life but rather simply one more bullet point on their list of interests. You are bound to run into far more people looking for a quick (and free) fix online now than you are respectable individuals that know a great deal about game design.

My point is merely that the most discerning eyes will not be on you, but rather a wider variety of people that not only do not care what makes Perfect Dark better than Goldeneye, but also wouldn't get it if you explained it to them.

Well, said, old friend, I couldn't agree with you more. Its little wonder SFGHQ is barely updated anymore, because standards are soo bloody high, its impossible to get something submitted! The last major fangame released there was Sonic: Time Attacked, which is well over a year ago at this stage.

Unfortately, theres a lot of assholes who only see that ' only perfect will do... OR ELSE! ' Get my point?

Not really.

The standards at SFGHQ have risen compared to what they were a year ago,
but a lot of people over-exaggerate the whole Well It doesn't have [Insert] so it automatically sucks. stuff that SFGHQ is known for recently.

I AGREE WITH THIS! The expectations for fangames has raised to much.
Fangamers don't have the proper time or equitment to make perfect games. Yet people expect your game to be perfect and when your game isn't perfect they scold you instead of trying to help the person improve the game. But like Henford said you should strive for perfection and if you do that you will probally get pretty close

Great, someone re-posts it! I have said this from time to time around these forums. It's not fair to the fangamers today. Back then (roughly 3 years ago) games like Mario Quest 2 or something were praised. Though it may be hard to return to that mentality, it is nessesary that we lighten up on our picture of a fangame. These new people are just like us when we first joined.

I don't think you posted an official topic and made a whole bunch of paragraphs about it.

Not to mention I don't think you mentioned the idiots of the forum.

I did. It was awesome except for some movement troubles. I wish I could play it again in fact, or that someone would make a game in a similar vein to it.

But yeah, that is very true. I, for one, am getting a bit tired of all fangames having to have some kind of uber static engine to be perfect. Look at Super Mario Epic 2: That didn't have a static engine, but it was still fun. Sure, it could've used one, but it worked almost just fine the way it was. A simple static engine just to iron out TGF's glitches is fine with me, but I hate it when people are expecting it to be super-complex...

QUOTE (Yoshiman @ Nov 22 2005, 05:04 AM)
Dear Friends and Others at MFGG,

Me and Chris had recently been discussing how people on the internet look upon the quality of fangames. This may be posted over at SFGHQ as an example as well.

To sum it up: People expect too much.

We know that games have been upgraded to much higher expectations now due to advancements in our software technology, and our age. Unfortunately, there's others who are new and are not as advanced.

So why are you so critical of the quality?

You must realize that we were all newbs/n00bs at one point of time with fangaming. We didn't produce the best quality around. But we also were young back then.

Here's another thing you must realize. WE ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS.

WE DO NOT HAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS PROFESSIONAL GAME DEVELOPERS. WE DO NOT HAVE AS MUCH TIME. WE DO NOT HAVE THE IMMEDIATE SOFTWARE.

SO WHY IS IT THAT EVERYTIME SOMEONE PRODUCES SOMETHING (whether game, sprite or otherwise), WE ALL BLAM IT TO DEATH IF IT'S NOT AT THE UPMOST QUALITY.

Don't be so judgemental. Do not just tell them "It sucks. Go away. Don't even attempt to try again." HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO LEARN THIS WAY? You do not learn by having someone insult your intelligence. You learn by improving.

So don't say it sucks. Constructive criticism. Tell them what's wrong. AND KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST OF US ARE IN SENIOR/JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL/MIDDLE SCHOOL. SOME OF US HAVE BEEN ADVANCED.

JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE BETTER KNOWLEDGE, DOESN'T MEAN THAT SOMEONE NEW HAS OUR KNOWLEDGE.

Seriously, like I said, you expect too much. You expect new people to atleast produce a full quality thing right away. No way. Rome wasn't built in a day.

And what about those of us who are better in knowledge? We try to the best of our ability to produce good quality. And what happens? "IT SUCKS. GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE WE TOSS YOU OUT." No, no, no. We are not professionals.

We are simply Mario fangamers. We like to make fangames. We do it for the reason to entertain you people.

SO WHY ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF ENTERTAINMENT SO HIGH FOR PEOPLE AS YOUNG AS US?

Another factor is the "idiots" we have around here. Recently, we've had more people that have joined our forum for the sheer joy of flaming others for what they try their best to do. Don't. Realize what we are. Realize our purpose. These are Mario fangames. These are not "try and create a full quality Nintendo clone." Like what we are already capable of doing. If you want more, you're an idiot, for thinking that we have to automatically be NOA staff.

Therefore, in conclusion, don't expect higher than what we can do, like our fangames for what they are, give constructive criticism, and most of all, don't be an idiot and flame others. They don't learn from insults. They learn from mistakes and improvements and the help of others.

Sincerely,
Yoshiman

i Agree indeed.

Best post ever.

truly Great nod.gif

hope we all lern from this.
