Mario characters

Its on Shroom Ridge and Mushroom Bridge.

...and.

Lot's of SMB3 stuff, like the desert and the flying fortress.
They also use SMB3 Mario as a symbol for 1player game and SMB3 Mario&Luigi for multiplayer.

I think Nintendo tries to think back of the awesomeness of SMB3 and probably wants to bring it back somehow. I hope this goes until SM128!!!

Baby Park, you can see a sign on a castle saying "Kameks Castle".

... Actually you can barely see it in MK:DS, but go and check it out on MK:DD =P

Something I thought was important; notice in Wario Stadium as well as other tracks, one of the signs is this logo with four circles and a letter within each circle.

There was a time way before Mario Kart DS was known as an online title that two "omg mysterious" trademarks came out, the Nintendo V-Pocket and that same logo with the letters "PCGP". At the time a lot of people said this stood for "Pokemon Card Game Players". And having seen no sign of a TCG sequel on its way; I thought it was pretty obvious whoever the dumbass that spread that rumor deserved to be shot.

The proof comes in the form of your very own Mario Kart DS game; check out the logo in Wario Stadium, it's on a yellos sign and you can catch it even before the first turn. It reads (from memory) W-THE WALUIGI L-G-P. In other words, like "Wario Brothers Grand Prix".

I haven't explored every track in this way; but I did notice other courses use the same logo; it's much more likely that the PCGP is just a unique logo for one of the tracks. Like "Peach Circuit Grand Prix"

I could've sworn the "W(Upside-down-L)GP" logo was used in Double Dash too...

But personally, one of my favorite throwbacks, is the platform blocks in Figure-8 Circuit. Including the white one, famous for the lore of holding down while atop it for a few seconds, then falling into the background.

...That, or the fact that Airship Fortress is acurate to the classic Doomship levels in every way, including the popping of of Rocky Wrenches on deck.
