From what I've played of 8, it wasn't as awful as people made out. It had a lot of hype behind it though, which is probably why people didn't like it.

And FFX wasn't that bad in my opinion either. I liked the battle system where you could swap in almost any character you wanted, and how they all had certain strengths and weaknesses with certain enemies. But the sphere grid system was slightly... I dunno, not very useful.
