MySpace Suicide Not Fake

Editor's Note: Suicide notes are usually written to intimates. In the case of one young man who just killed himself in Orange County, Calif., the suicide note was posted on a popular social networking Web site. PNS contributor Milan Gagnon reports as one of millions of people who followed the suicide online. Gagnon is a writer based in Prague.

Czech Republic--At 8:14 a.m. on Nov. 29, Joshua Anson Ballard posted his final bulletin on the Internet social-networking site MySpace.com. Ballard, who took the online identity "you BROKE my LIFE," followed his subject line, "do me a favore [sic] ....", with a body that read:

"call the police.
Address ... Abadejo, Mission Viejo, CA 92692.
tell them to go down the hall to the bathrooom.
im soo sorry<3"

About 15 minutes later, according to the Orange County coroner's office, Josh, 17, killed himself with a gunshot to the head. Within minutes, MySpace, which promotes social interaction among young people and is popular with teenagers, was alight with messages about the suicide. Here in Prague, I saw a note about Josh on MySpace and checked it out.

By 10 p.m. the night of his death, Josh was being eulogized.

Suicide is stupid, no sympathy.

When all your classmates hate you and want to make your life a miserable living hell and your dad beats the **** out of you because your punkass little sister tells him you were on the computer just because she wants to see you in trouble, it would sound like a good idea to you as well.

Yeah, perfect reaction to somebody who says he tried to kill himself once. No need to try to understand the situation, a freaked-out smiley will suffice to make them feel worse about it.

Anyway, yeah. Do the kids who kill themselves for attention realize they won't be around to enjoy it?

Exactly what I was thinking.


Especially because of the thought that it seems like he garnered popularity and made so many "friends" online, just to freak people out by killing himself, looking for attention.

I'm gonna die of poor health before im 50, anyway.

I'm sorry, my life isn't a walk in the park ethier. But I don't understand why people think ending the one and only time you get to live is better.

My life has been **** and back. 1995 I had no will to live. until around the release of DKC2 which TOTALLY saved my sanity and had me ignore crap to focus on my own mindworld. I will not speak of 1995 ever again. Right now, while my online life feels totally wasted with exception of the hole of a few friends I've been hiding in, my offline life has been flourishing with a lot of good things, opportunities and wonders. Graduation, offline art community, getting my first paying job that isn't freelancing, the theatre, my studio, and my increase in charisma as a leader. Still, family life, finals, and financial issues will always hinder my happyland and stress me out, but everything wll work out in the end.

We have but one life, but an infinite amount of continues. That's what I've learned from a relative's Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

My life ****ing sucks right now. I have never felt worse than I do currently. But I'm not suiciding.

There are times when my life has been crap, but I'd never think of suicide.

Procrastination did one good thing to me

It sure as hell raised my tolerance for stress so now it's nearly impossible for me to even THINK about suicide

I fear death as is. Nothing would ever make me want to stop living. Just get my name changed and live a new life on mars!

Honestly if you got another life you wouldn't remember anything so you would never be able to tell if you got a second life. So ethier way you really only get one life at a time.

I think suicide is the most retarded thing in the world.

Of course, I've never even THOUGHT about suicide, regardless of what was happening in my life, so. I've always had a pretty cozy, happy rainbow life.
