Really, you're going to have to download a basic one (emphasis on basic) and read through its events and build your own, referencing your model when necessary. Even if you only succeed in duplicating the reference engine, you'll have exposure to the basic machinery for static engines and how they work.
Then you can either make a new one, or build on what you have. And if you stick to it, you'll discover some tricks and methods of your own. Given the time frame of a year, if you're still working with static engines, you'll probably be making things that don't even resemble your first practice attempt.
