ImageMagick is very good it contains a lot of features, even things that alchemy does not do.

Here is a way to convert all files in a directory to lowercase (sometimes useful if you are copying files to UNIX server) (it works only in Windows XP):
CODE
for /f %i in ('dir/l/b') do ren %i %i

if we're talking about palettes in gif files, image viewers like irfanview or xnview can do palette-editing

Paint.NET FTW. Ever since my friend introduced me to it recently, I've been using it as my main image editing program. (My current avatar was made using it.)

Here's a really good program for recording and editing sounds (like WAVs, MP3s, and other stuff):

WavePad

Please note that you have to pay for the Masters Edition, unless you get the free trial for it. The normal version, however, which you can get by clicking "Download WavePad", is FREE.

Neat tools and useful utils!

Here are a couple of utils I use:

Shalom Help Maker
A powerful and freeware help editor, can create standard Win32 help files.

GIMPshop
Freeware. Equaly powerful as photoshop! Requires GTK runtimes to work in Windows.

THE DRAW! 4.63
Ugly, oldskool but oh so goddamn funky! ANSI art at it's best!!

Artweaver (Windows)- As far as i can tell, this is a freeware equivalent of Painter... it's still far from the 1.0 stage but it has enough features to be useful
