Today I was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia. More commonly known as SVT. SVT is a condition which causes episodes of a fast heartbeat. Sometimes it happens once a year, once a month, or in my case, once a week or more. Apparently my heart's beating is inturrpted when chemicals are just right, the circuit that carries the signals to make the heart beat faster as when running or such. There's really two ways to treat this. One is take pills called Beta Blocker which is taken every day for the rest of my life. Only thing is it has some rather annoying side effects such as slowed heart beat when running which means I lose my breath nearly three times faster which, at this age I really can't do. The other choice I have is best described by a quote:

QUOTE
A catheter (small wire) is passed via a large vein in your leg into the chambers of your heart. It is guided by special x-ray techniques. The tip of the catheter can destroy a tiny section of heart tissue that is the source or 'trigger' of the abnormal electrical impulses. This is only suitable if the exact site of the trigger can be found by special tests, and be located accurately by the catheter tip. It can be very successful, and after the procedure you do not need to take medication to prevent SVT.

However, there is not doing anything. Which could be good or bad. The main problem with having these attacks is becoming so light headed that I can't drive or do serious activites. (Not that I drive yet anyway) My doctor also noted that this MIGHT be related to stress and the past two years really haven't been great for me. So what I plan on doing is waiting for at least 3 or 4 months to see if these attacks slow down a bit. If not I'd rather get the treatment done. Anyone got any suggestions?

On a side note, I got to see my heart on a sonogram type thing which was pretty cool.

Was this a problem since birth or has it just developed?

It's something I was born with, but never had any attacks since the last two years. Which is why I tie it to stress with my whole parent's divorce and such.

Oh **** man that sucks... If you take the pills every day it won't seem like a big deal after a while, it'll just come naturally... I had to take these capsules 4 times a day when my ear burst and after the first few days it became like instinct to take my pills at the right time.

Wow... dude. That sucks. I thought I had it bad when I was diagnosed as being mildly Autistic but that is nothing compared to you. My baby sister has some heart problem too... the vessels in her heart are enlarged or something and it causes blood to leak back into the heart.

Good luck with everything. I'll keep you in my prayers =)

I had simular problems, related to my heart.
I've never told anyone.
When it happens to you does your throat feel like it's closing up.
It's happend three times in the past month. I blame stress.

If so I share your problem. k?
I wouldn't get it treated, but I have more chicken **** pumping through my veins than blood anyway.

So really, MG old pal, I'm with you all the way, buddy ol' pal. Ever need to talk to somebody, I'm there on AIM.

No, that sounds more serious. I just get a bit lightheaded. Which can be awsome on roller coasters like I did over the weekend. :p

I'm actually not that scared of that treatment. The doctor who diagnosed me had the same thing in 1999. She said there's like a 0.2% of anything bad happening. But I won't know if it'll work until they go in through my leg. (They have to actually find it first)

Jesus, I feel like a **** for ever being an asshole to you...

But seriously, if nothing can seriously go wrong during treatment, I see wait a few months and get that. If there is a risk though, go with the pills.

Good choice you've made, sir. Just wait for a few months, you might want to just try relaxing and getting more sleep as well, I notice you're on AIM when it's 11:00 PM my time, which is midnight your time. You need to sleep more.

And not to mention don't let school get you all stressed out.

If you have any other problems you don't wish to carry out here/think might have connections to your brain, AIM me, please.

And not to mention don't work anymore on my level until this is all worked out, unless that's not another addition to your stress.

And good luck, of course. The choice is yours, but I do believe what you've decided to do seems to be the best thing to do at this point.

That sucks.

I sometimes feel like my heart is beating quite fast, but thats probably just when i get really excited or something.

All i can say is this: If your worried about the op., then take the pills. Then if you someday feel like the op., you can have it.

I'm on a Beta Blocker myself; very small dosage of doxazosin and it is incredibly draining. But believe me, it's better to live with that than die of heart disease.

I dont know you very much, but sorry, man. If I were you I'd take the pills.

Or just wait a few months, and if you are having trouble, take the pills like other people said.

Life does indeed suck, until we can figure out how to make it better, so take that as a challenge :D

I'd say you try out the pills for a while and see how good you're remembering at taking them. If not, I'd take the surgery.
