I think he's talking about people who make drastic changes to the game's world, ie making the Mushroom Kingdom full of Nazis or something like that.

Actually, sometimes it works depending on the type of genre of the game..

for example..

A few explicit words, and acts and scenes could work in a sort of Conker's Bad Fur Day type fangame, ok, the people can never pull it off, but it suits the genre of the game.

Acts of violent warfare could work if it was a Mario vs. Hitler game or something like that..

If for example it was called the Super Mario Brothers Super Game and there was rude words, and the enemies were all Hitler, then it wouldn't work.

See what I mean?

Characters having a completely different personality than the one assigned to them by the official creators. Pisses me off so ****ing badly.

Storyline inconsistency

Oversized screen resolutions.

Badly assigned hotspots/Bad animation. Don't want the character jumping all over the place unless I tell him to, thx.

Lack of music. Makes it boring.

Bad choice of music.

Touch-death enemies. You should at least be able to kill them >_>

Excessive pits. Why do people love these so much?

And, 'course, insta-delete. If something dies, don't make it just disappear with no trace. Add an explosion, a small "pop" animation or something. I just hate when things disappear into nothing.

Two words. The offspring...

I am a Huge fan of the offspring, but i have to say, it's way too overused.

Edit: oh and games made in TGF/GM/MMF/any point and click game making program, tend to suck.

Good job alienating yourself from literally every fangamer at this board, including myself. smile.gif Quick note: most people don't appreciate being told their work sucks because of the program it was made in.

I really dislike that all games have music, and that almost none of them allow me to turn it off, so I have to turn off the synth volume so that Winamp doesn't get its feelings hurt. Or, you know, I'm kinda screwed if I'm enjoying a good Zillion midi or something.

Fangames with a limited stock of enemies are boring, too. Fangame creators should be coming up with all sorts of weirdo ways enemies can move and/or attack Mario. What about a piranha plant that jumps from pipe to pipe, eh?

Using game making programs is extremely lazy, but it works IMO, so whatever. :b

Two things...

Yes.. nirvana is also over used...

Read Carefully jeff, i said TEND to suck.. not all games in it suck, but there are so many limitations in it, that it just makes them not so great, i admit there are great games made in them, but, those are rare(That cheese one, SME, ect ect). And really, learning to do all those fancy static engines in them, is a waste of time, because you could of learned a real coding language in the time you spent doing that.

Edit: TGF and such is a great start, and a great tool, i still use it myself for animations. and timing. but i prefer coding in java and C++.

Ah, gotchya. To be honest, you're actually right, the number of fangames created in TGF/MMF that suck tend to outnumber the quality games. Still, the way you worded made it sound like you meant all or nearly all (or like you feel that any game made in that program is automatically inferior to the same game made with code).

The simple fact is I've tried to learn code before and couldn't do it. Maybe I just don't have the attention span, I don't know. What I do know is that I much prefer level design and the such to engine creation, and the Klik products allow me to focus more on designing fun levels than programming movement and the such.

Yeah, I hate when they give Mario the mouth of a Sailor/Rapper. It does not fit with the Mario Universe at all.

Oh, and Bouncing Ball Bosses, or Bosses that have Line Movement.

What I hate in fangames has been mostly covered already... but I'll just reiterate some of the things I hate the most:

-Lousy bosses. Path movement bosses annoy me the most. Although bouncing ball bosses that move randomly and quickly can be just as bad.

-Tedious challenges. I'm talking about the levels that go on forever, the bosses with extremely high health, stuff like that. Nothing will get me to close out of the game as quickly.

-Self insertions/fan characters. I'm not playing fangames to look at "cleverly" placed friends of yours, and I sure as hell don't want to play you as a boss.

-Mario swearing or being all angsty. Yeeeeah.

-Cutscenes that you can't skip. For some reason, these also tend to be the worst kinds of cutscenes around. Hmm.

-Invisible platforms/obstacles/required paths. I don't think this has been covered, but it really isn't that common. I'll only say that I have seen it, and it's just no fun to play. (to be fair, I was sort of guilty of this in Yoshi's Quest, but there was also a way to see the path, if only for a short period of time)

BUILT IN PLATFORM MOVEMENT HATES

1. Getting stuck in blocks or the ceiling, and having to restart the GAME

2. "Hit an object in mid-air" jumping glitch. ESPECIALLY over pits.

3. Hit-the-ground deceleration

4. Climbing up walls, although this can sometimes let you cut huge chunks out of a s***ty level

5. Levels that weren't designed for said movement

OTHER HATES

1. "Shoot an object" unless it's restricted to specific directions (shooting fireballs upwards anyone?)

2. (Usually in GM games) scrolling that gives you 20 pixels of forward viewing distance

3. Coins/objects that serve no purpose whatsoever

4. Having lives when you end up losing them all on the first level

5. Incredibly long games with no save feature

6. MIDI LOOP SKIP

When I open the Queue Moderation page, and notice that a game is either:
a.) Not zipped.
b.) A .GAM or .GM6 or whatever file instead of a standalone.
c.) Based entirely off a open-source game tutorial, with only graphic and sound changes.
d.) All of the above.
