Star rankings in Mario Kart DS, A topic for those who want star ranks

I get Star Ranks and I didn't always finish first in all the races on 150CC races










I thought it was about performance so

It is from what I recall.


Getting first all the time usually helps in getting a 3-star rank(unless you hit the walls alot or fall off and stuff).

Isn't it just up to time?

I finally got a 3-star ranking. I had no trouble, except for mirror mode :\

Time has _no_ bearing on your ranking.

Just avoid obstacles and walls, hit with most of your itmes, stay on the track, finish with 40 points, and dodge all the Blue Shells you can.

Well it was an intuitive guess since anything short of perfect hurts your time.

And how the **** do you dodge a blue shell.

you stop and get close to the person behind you so that he also get's caught in the explosion.

I fail to see where that's "dodging" when you still get nuked. Being a prick to the AI, maybe.

Supposedly using a Mini-Turbo or a Boost as the shell explodes will cause the explosion to not affect you =D

Step 1: When you see the Blue Shell on your Touch Screen, charge up a Mini Turbo (It helps to be on a turn).
Step 2: When the Shell stops above you, release the Mini Turbo.
Step 3: When the Shell drops, hold the direction you were drifting in and jump.
Step 4: Watch the nublet behind you disconnect because he can't stand your 1337ness. Alternatively, get first by a larger time than ever.

It helps to be in a Kart with high Drift. The Light Tripper is the best Kart for Blue Shell Dodging (BSDing). If you want to BSD on WiFi, which is at 100cc, you'll NEED a Kart with substantial Drift; The lowest Drift that the BSD can be accomplished at 100cc is that of the Shooting Star. Don't expect to use your beloved Dry Bomber and be able to BSD on WiFi with it.

Also, turns with high banking or upward slopes are more difficult to BSD on, but turns going down make it super easy. It has to do with your airtime; After jumping, you move through the air faster, which is why your engine revs up when hopping over a ledge. So the jump that dodges the Shell is giving you the little nudge you need to outrun the explosion. And because Drift determines not only how tightly you can drift, but how fast you go when drifting, it ups your speed even more and leaves the Shell's attack in your exhaust.

I've heard that you can make the Blue Shell miss you by hitting a fence with a pit hazard on the other side the moment it drops. This makes sense, since the Blue Shell stops a few inches in front of you then drops straight down to strike. I've been able to send the Shell down a hole like this, but it still hit me.

True or False: I have too much time on my hands.

Except when you get blue shells and red shells at the same time every 5 freakin' seconds.


And BSDing will not help when they come at you every 5 seconds, unless you are the creators of the game itself.

Well I guess that rules out every cart I've used.

I get that too.

Sometimes I will get hit by 5 Blue shells in ONE race.

The creators are rarely the best at games, or even the most knowledgeable >=P

You must have unlocked the VERY hard mode then. =O

Theres no very hard mode in MKDS.
