Super Mario: The Odyssey Chronicles
Story:
One day in the Mushroom Kingdom, a mysterious cloud falls upon the land. The Nothern Volcano has erupted. Princess Peach is distraught at all of the news. She sends Mario on a quest called The Odyssey to see what the disturbance is. However, in the confusion of the thickening ash clouds, the Princes is captured. Kammy is in her throne. The witch sends out minons to take over the land. They infiltrate any Mushroom Kingdom strongholds and take over the poor citizens' homes and villages. Mario decides to carry out the Princess's plan: The Odyssey.

This is a game I started a while ago. I have an engine I want you to try out, but my file host is not letting me log in, so the engine is attatched to this post.

This is made with GameMaker 6.1, so beware.

The gravity seems too high, you might want to make the gravity and jumping speed lower. The lack of a run button might be a bit annoying, but that depends on what kind of level design you're going for. If you're not going to put in a run key, you might want to make Mario walk faster.

That said, the engine is solid, gravity and running (in this case at least) are just nitpicks. Also, I like how the boxes flash when you hit them, little touches like that are always good.

I am working on a run key right now, but I keep running into dead ends. As for the gravity, that'll be easy to improve.

Gravity is 100% ok and is exactly like in the normal Mario games.
It just HAS to stay as it is.
The problem is that Mario is too slow and therefore it appears he can't jump far enough.
Run key or faster walking speed should work here.

Ok then. The keys will also be changed to Z/Y and X for running and jumping.

And does anyone know what Mario game has the best music to use? I can't decide to go with SMW stuff or not.

I always like downloading mixs of music, so just go withwhatever you want


Why don't you make a rainbow road stage when you get to the clouds? It could have SNES Rainbow Road music. (all the other rainbow roads don't sound right.


Anyway,i think the mushrooms are too slow. Also, well like everyone else is saying, speed mario up

The thing with mixing music is, they often don't match.
And the mushroom will go faster after Mario is sped up.

New demo is out. Use <shift> to run and <control> to jump. Again, the lives are not supposed to work. There are also many graphical errors I want to fix. I'm open to any other suggestions.

This gets better and better.
I found a nice glitch:
-You can jump of invisible blocks if you know where they are.
Just jump and hit ctrl when you are touching one and you jump in mid-air.
-Gameplay feels good, could use some friction though and the same jump height control for enemy bouncer-offs as for normal jumps.
-And you might want to change shift and control, since they are normally used other way round.

Other than that very nice, no glitches or errors that destroy the fun factor.

Hopefully you finish this!
