Is there an easy, free way to do it? I'd like to use my Notebook for SOMETHING after all.

By booting off Windows do you mean getting rid of Windows all together and getting a new OS? If so I'd reccomend Linux for a Free way.

I can still edit my signature.

Yup, as it is now the 30th day of May in the year of 2010.

Fedora Core is solid for beginners
So easy to install

Ubuntu is a bit flawed; for one thing it isn't possible to log yourself in as an administrator, so if you want to do administrative tasks (like settings) you need to use sudo, which is a pain in the ass at times

Wouldn't you know it? Linux is mentioned and I show up.

But if you're just looking for something to get your lappy going again, maybe you'd want to try Knoppix since it runs straight off a CD. It will at least get you going again without worrying about losing files, etc.

The thing is if you do want to really get your laptop going on Linux, it's gonna take some dedication to get all your parts working again (wireless cards and dial-up modems prove to be hard on Linux newcomers).

EDIT: But if you really wanna run OSX or something off of your laptop, there's a program called PearPC which you can run MacOS from within Windows, but that didn't sound like what you needed. You do have to have your own MacOS installation disc though.
