http://www.pokemon.com/flash.asp

Another Pokemon National Championship is being held. An entirely new mall tour is going around the country starting this Saturday in Miami.

The main points; 21 different pokemon will be downloadable from an official Nintendo machine. These 21 pokemon include:

Celebi
Charizard
Blaziken
Articuno
Pikachu
Dragonite
Zapdos
Latios
Latias
Entei
Blastoise
Moltres
Typhlosion
Espeon
Umbreon
Raikou
Absol
Bulbasaur
Tyranitar
Alakazam
Suicune

How were these decided? Apparently there was a poll but weeks ago on Pokemon.com I realize some of the download picks are pretty sad; but it's a safe be t that you will feel content enough with their unique Nintendo IDs that you won't mind that you can catch most of these under your own power.

Anyhow; the other big news. At 24 locations in this country these mall tours will meet. There is going to be a 64 person tournament for two age-groups at each one. As such, first 64 people in age group to the mall get to compete (you also have to complete an online pre-registration that is not updated to the site yet, even though it is past due).

You're either in the under 13 bracket, or the 13 and up.

From these 64 local poke-masters will be determined one champion. If you are the winner, you win a trip to New York for you and one other person. You will fly to New York in August to compete with the remaining 23 pokemon trainers in your age bracket to become the National Champion.

Synopsis: I'm going. You should too. Maybe we'll meet in the finals.

Well; the Miami sign-ups have come and gone, your chance to compete in them will be dependent on your ability to be like; first in line to replace anyone that doesn't show up. But if you go you still have the downloads/whatever else they give away at this thing.

I can't wait; it's such a scary and fun prospect... the mall tour in 2000 was so long again

Here's my report from GB on the event: names edited to screennames you'd recognize.

QUOTE
Well we got a little bit boned; to recap in full for everyone will take some time, so please bare with me.

Firstly; the teams:

Nightwing
- Dodrio
- Jolteon
- Houndoom
- Salamence
- Dusclops (never got used)
- Gengar (never intended to be used)

Press Start:
- Zapdos
- Rayquaza
- Blissey
- Swampert
- Metagross
- Grumpig

PokeHero
- Snorlax
- Metagross
- Mewtwo
- Latios
- Tauros
- Weezing (Never used)

Lots of shiz was goin' on here of course, we got to the deal just before 10. Doors hadn't opened yet, the entire thing took place in a little aclove of the mall, about the same size of the 2000 event, but now with everything far more condensed to be more friendly to the (unbelievably heavy) mall traffic at the Parks. One weird blue-haired kid almost got turned away for competing in multiple tournaments, but apparently between mommy and daddy's threats and the general malaise of the staff he was able to play; because, afterall this was done at the other tournaments, where people were allowed to compete more than once =p

I think any normal person that showers regularly realizes once was enough for many many months.

While very competitive and hopelessly intense at times, there were many surprises about the overall experience. The main one? The days of rare candy duping seem to be past somehow, not everyone buys a gameshark I guess; and even the champion didn't shark his pokemon (but I'd guess a lot of people in the top 8 didn't). Of course you are allowed to assume the truth in that, your fellow GBers did -not- misrepresent themselves with mad hax.

Also, feel free to assume it was awesome to watch PokeHero's brother take 2nd place and a Game Boy Micro.

As for the actual 'adult' tournament, it was divided into two brackets, as opposed to the two for the first one. 32 people apiece; with the seeds looking rather ugly.

Basically you had:
Match you don't care about
Match with strangers
Press Start vs. a girl
Nightwing vs. guy
PokeHero vs. dude

etc. etc.

So yes; we neighbor each other in the worst possible fashion from the get go. Most of the hardcore people (well, haha, they thought they were hardcore; I don't know if you've heard of Smogon, but those people in all their creepy age ranges got sent packing). This is where the weird/funny stuff comes in; while there were indeed a lot of walk-in competitors, far more so than pre-registrants, the kids that showed up were always unprepared in some bizarre fashion. Apparently EV training isn't the only obnoxious task kids aren't willing to commit to these days... in my first match I was asked "what level are your pokemon?"

I replied in shock "100!" how the hell could you hope to play without'em? Oh dear. The first guy had like, one or two L80s, I only remember the one (an Espeon), the rest were poorly trained L100s that I can only assume did not have EV training. After I pulled out a win from that, it turns out Press Start/PokeHero had similarly bad situations; there's even more jokey than mine. Kids with L70 pokemon, plus some that were banned from the tournament; so the match had to be delayed a bit (since Mask is a nice guy and didn't want to eject an innocent child for being silly).

Next round, there is a bloody brother on brother battle that ended predictably bad, I defeated Press Start, but at least that freed one of us up to get drinks; the heat in the room was starting to become unbearable, the smell; luckily didn't permeate far from the onion pits of our local competitors.

For me, the competition would soon come to a close; I thought for sure after this next match, I would be going up against our boy Mask; I beat a catholic Mexican kid, was pretty nice (came back to talk to me later), AGAIN no legendaries. I was sure it would be nothing but Groudon for me all day long; but most Groudon teams ended up fighting each other, and I stayed outside their reach (honestly, kind of a disappointment). So basically after having an easy time of it; and only fighting legendaries from my bro and PokeHero, I'm eliminated after the brackets are SUDDENLY merged. The combinations now made even less sense; but with me out, as well as the old creepy guy we thought was one of our biggest threats (again apparently Smogon, what a weird place). PokeHero continues to be the hero, defeating a very talented girl's team; before advancing to the final...

(where he too got boned by luck, losing his Tauros in one hit to a critical hit Psychic from Mewtwo).

There was a lot of BS luck, but there wasn't a lot of BS cheating. For that I was impressed. We met a long of players, good players; no true innovators for sure, and I didn't even get to try out my innovation *grrr no Groudon teams for me eh*

But a great time was held by all; and two brothers stuck with old GBAs now ride in Micro style yo.

Still; none of us go to New York, but the asshole other site pretty much lost out, and people were exposed for the greedy scum they are... it was beautiful =p

Congratulations to PokeHero; I know we didn't get this thing to work out nearly as well as we hoped, we shoulda split up in line; the brackets were stacked against us anyway, etc. etc... but at least this way you came away with a sweet new Micro, that I know you must be enjoying already.
