You're going to need the following things to make a skin...

a. Custom images, can't help you here. Just make them relate to your overall theme.
b. To edit the CSS for the skin. Just grab the code between the style tags when you view the source for the forum index or something like that and edit it. Put it in its own .txt file to keep track of it.
c. A color scheme. Mix and match to see what looks good but don't blind the users with godawful color choices.
d. To get feedback from the forum. What's the point in creating a skin if the users who would use it hate it?

For help with editing the CSS, here's an excellent guide that I used to create mine:
http://www.duggyd.co.uk/css/ipb1_2_0/index.htm

For help with getting the hex values, you can try this site:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colorsfull.asp
I hear there are other ways to get hex values for your color of choice, various graphic editors and such.

Oh and a tip: DOWNLOAD VARIOUS PARTS OF THE BOARD AS AN HTML PAGE AND CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR STUFF IS WORKING THE WAY YOU LIKE. And make sure you get all of the images. It is sort of difficult but you can do it.

This is a very awesome tool, basically it will grab various infomation about the color your cursor is over in any application including the hex value. You could even do it doring in a game if you wanted.

I know, not a very extensive or interesting guide. But perhaps someone could do a better version?

To create a skin, you will also need to know where to place your images.

I have made separate pages for further details on custom skins and I will update it over time.

Do not abuse this, please, it is important guests can reply and I don't want to have to disable it because a thousand gibbering fools spammed it up.

I think invisionfree has a lot less images.

Dunno though.

The only difference in Invision Free and Invision Power Board is that Powerboard's source code is given. This allowed RII to code the badge system, whose images span every skin anyway. :p
