| QUOTE (dustindemon @ Mar 28 2006, 07:05 AM) | Doesn't affect me at all, I have all those games for the 64 anyways. Plus, I hate the original PD. PDZ is okay by me, yo.
Am I the only one who's still a Rareware fanboy? |
No, you're not.
Personally, I kind of knew since the beginning that if this were to happen, it'd be a miracle in itself. While I'm kind of saddened, I take consolance in the fact that I own all the Rare N64 games anyway.
I'm still hoping for the enitre SNES DKC trilogy. I'd be heartbroken if that wouldn't be available for download.
I just hope that Rare can port some of their earlier titles like Snake, Rattle N' Roll and Anticipation to the Rev. Until then, looks like my N64 hasn't breathed its last breath.

For all you people who seem to be legitimately confused about this situation:
Because Rare owns the code that made up Goldeneye, and Electronic Arts owns the Bond license; Goldeneye is a game divided that without heavy editing (likely) or a multi-company agreement (nevereverever) it will not see a port.
For the same reasons, many games that were forged on shaky deals may slip right from developers' grip. Simply because so much time has passed, and they don't have access to these franchises anymore.
So, ifyou're looking forward to like, downloading the N64 Spider-Man game... you could actually do that, because Activision is still clinging to the rights of the wall-crawler. But if you wanted like... Maximum Carnage from the SNES? It can't happen, Acclaim is long since out of business, and while a new company has decided to adopt their namesake; you'll find it isn't looking good for Maximum Carnage, Software Creations was an internal Acclaim house from what I can tell, and regardless to them automatically owning the code, the same reason you -can- get Spidey 64 is the one you cannot get just about any Spider-Man game prior.
Comic book franchises, as well as movie licensees; are not going to be prevalent on the Revolution virtual console as some would hope. There are a few obvious exceptions, what with internal publishers to the franchise like with Lucasarts, making Star Wars ports from all generations a great possibility.
But really, you should be expecting video game greats to lead the charge, and not the good licensed games (back when there was such a thing) Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, the Belmont clan, Bonk, just about every major franchise can and probably will appear in some form, 1000 Genesis games alone is indicative of how much support this thing is getting. At E3, it is likely we'll finally get a list of just who all has signed on

Allow me to just step in here for a second, and point out something:
Some of you folks are honestly fooling yourself, if you think that Rare was some completely original mastermind.
The only innovative thing about the company as a whole, was that they were one of the first (if not THE first) non-Japanese company to step up, and publically display that they were following in the same direction as Sega and Nintendo were, when it comes to displaying iconicity through their characters.
However, Yamauchi never hired Tim and Chris Stamper because of their outstanding way to 'develop characters' or 'write a story'.
Nintendo most likely decided to contract from Rareware on that one night where Tim Stamper displayed to the 'higher up' Nintendo members a glossy, pre-rendered tech demo, featuring two boxers (of course this technology would be implamented in all of Rare's later SNES games).
Yamauchi never once thought to himself 'I'm going to let these guys hop on my train, because they can easily replace Yokoi and Miyamoto', he wanted them because he needed as much pseudo technical superiority he could possibly get, to beat out Sega and the little blue hedgehog.
Now let's move forward a few years in the future, to the days of the Nintendo 64.
Here, I can't not point out one single original game from Rareware.
It was Banjo, to Mario 64; Diddy Kong Racing, to Mario Kart. Of course, there's a somewhat visable difference between the games, but not a significant enough change. It was sort of a 'Let's take what Miyamoto did wrong, and take it two steps forward'. A change from 'Rock' to 'Heavy metal'. Something very vague.
People at E3 didn't find Banjo impressive because it was an outstandingly original, and innovative game; they found it as a 'sister' to Super Mario 64, which led to a jocular competition between Nintendo, and their -then- second party development house. However, when consumers started to find out about this, Rareware cleaned up their act. Conker for example; instead of directly ripping off a Ninetendo game, they cooked a subpar platformer. But nobody would confuse it for anything of the Nintendo brand, because of the horrible, and raunchy humor.
