http://blazefire.mooglecavern.com/sekrit/nsmb.zip - 3.56mb.

What is it? Quoting the readme:

QUOTE
Welcome to the Un-Official New Super Mario Brothers Demo. In this, I have tried to replicate World 1-1 of the Nintendo DS title, "New Super Mario Brothers" as best as humanly possible, based on preview videos released of the game from Game Developers Conference 2006. It is not 100% accurate, and should not be considered represenative of what the final game will play like - however, it does act as a fairly nice taste of what's to come.

Originally this was created because I was going to release the game's engine, open-source, but the amount of fiddling required just to get it to run this one level bug free has made me wary of doing so. Either way, I have included the .CCA file (openable in Clickteam's The Games Factory, Multimedia Fusion, or better) for the curious. The level you see here was made to demonstrate my engine's features. The level itself (including the NSMB-alike interface) took roughly a week to construct. I've been messing with the underlying engine on and off for six months now.

In other words, it's win-win:

- You get a pretty okay, if rough, Mario Engine to tinker with in MMF.

- You get to kinda-sorta try the first level of New Super Mario Brothers. I had to make a couple of exceptions; I used a Gametrailers GDC video to base the level off of. I obviously don't know where ALL the items and secrets are, so I had to take guesses on what was in certain item blocks and which pipes you can go down. Besides that, it's translated pretty well.

The engine, if you're wondering, was constructed because I felt bad after I recieved a few complaints about MarioWeen's engine. It was sort of a "See? I'm not horrible!" sort of thing. I lost interest, until I decided to pick it up again in hopes to release it open-source. I commented on a lot of the engine, but like I said, it's still kind of rough. It's no "All Mario Engine", but maybe some of you could get some use out of it.

Oh man, this is brilliant. You never cease to amaze me, man. This is something that I've been wanting to use in upcoming games.

Very nice solid engine. Very nice.

Oh, incase you can't open the CCA, I use a small handful of extensions:

- INI Plus
- DMC2
- Fastloop

You can get them at a place like this.

The CCA included is just the engine, too. If you want, I'll gladly post up the CCA for the entire demo - I didn't put that in there because that would've nearly doubled the size of the download. :P The entire Demo's CCA uses a ton more extensions, too. Window Object, Window Size, Joypad Object... and it's MMF1.5 only. :P

I myself would like to take a peek at how you did the bouncy letters, probably a simple thing but I never knew how =P

Oh yeah, and I may use the engine(along with Kaepora on ideas and story and whatever he wants to do, part of Tech Wing and yeah)for a future project. =)

All in all it's one of the best engines I have seen personally, but since it's open source etc I can't really comment on the minor things that make no real difference in the actual engine that I notice.

The Demo's full CCA. :P Note that the engine version in this is slightly more up-to-date than the other one (minor fixes for things), but generally in my experience MMF doesn't like it when you build a big level and then delete it all, which is why the "just engine" CCA has such a small area to run around in. :P

Coolage.
Not perfect, but cool. You could make one hell of a game out of this, if you spent more time on it.
I like the score at the end, when the crowd goes "OOOOOH!" when you overtake the old high score. ^^

The crowd actually cheers several different ways depending on what your score is.

Less than half of the high score = Bummed "Awwww".
Greater than half of the high score = Pity Applause.
Greater than the high score = Applause.
Within less than ten points of the high score = Shocked "Ohhh!"
Double the high score = Louder applause.

What about more than double the high score? :o

Is the castle at the end ripped directly from videos of the game?

EDIT: I checked, nevermind.

Sprites don't work well with MMF.

But that's not your fault. Very impressive.

A few little annoyances I found (excluding a few minor graphical glitches):
- can't ground pound koopas
- fireballs are awkward
- things tend to get jumpy a bit when colliding with walls
This is a mighty fine engine though. Keep it up! ^_^
