| QUOTE | March 29, 2006 - In an interview with CNNMoney, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke about Nintendo's position in the next generation market, and specifically about the company's forthcoming console, still-codenamed Revolution.
Although many new Xbox 360 games launch with a suggested retail price of $59.99, Iwata dismissed the possibility that Nintendo would follow suit with its first party Revolution games. "I cannot imagine any first party title [on Revolution] could be priced more than $50," he said. "I really don't think that there's going to be a lot of acceptance by current customers of the $60 price tag."
Nintendo's president further elaborated that simple, addictive games like Tetris might be offered through Revolution's virtual console, while "masterpiece" titles would more likely be distributed on physical discs.
Consumers can buy Xbox 360 with a 20 gigabyte hard drive and Sony recently announced that PlayStation 3, which launches later this year, will require a 60 gigabyte drive. Revolution, on the other hand, will feature only 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, to which downloaded games and other content can be stored. Nintendo at the Game Developers Conference 2006 announced that SEGA Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 titles can be downloaded to Revolution's virtual console.
Iwata told CNNMoney that Revolution users would be able to expand the system's 512MBs of internal flash memory with SD Cards, which can be plugged into the front of the console. SD Cards come in sizes upward of 8GBs. More interestingly, though, is what Iwata suggested to the publication, which is that because Revolution features two USB ports "… practically any storage method can be used." This comment would seem to indicate that users will, in fact, be able to hook up a hard drive to Revolution for significantly expanded storage.
Finally, the Japanese executive hinted that more virtual console partners were on board and would be announced at a future date. "A number of different publishers are now interested in participating in this virtual console system," he said. "As far as the details, though, I believe we will wait for another opportunity before discussing them."
Nintendo will launch its new generation Revolution console before Thanksgiving in America. The company plans to pull back the curtains on the machine, showing any secret features and playable games, at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May.

It's unlikely; I think what you're actually going to see is that Nintendo keeps its own hands clean of the storage media. You're going to have tons of people using all sorts of USB compatible devices for storage (great, compatibility is always good), but I don't think we should forget about the constantly pushed and never delivered on SD "Digicards".
The SD memory card adapter was to fit a GCN memory card slot, but inside of the actual unit, it would also accept a little flash disk. This boasted near gigabytes of memory, and now so many years in the future, they're easily affordable.
While that sort of lends itself to the speculation that, Revolution was originally thought of as mere add-ons for GCN; I hardly think that's a fair assertion. Nintendo always has had to push their ideas further down the line, force feedback, online play, motion sensor controllers; all this stuff has been on their radar long before it got popular, but they never start with it until they can do it correctly.
At this juncture, we're looking at a potentially phenomenal partnership/synergy between SD and Nintendo, as far as I know they stil have some decent ties.
Only reasons I'd say Nintendo branded external HDD are unlikely, is the cost. The whole idea of Revolution is as this topic states, keep games at a manageable cost to the consumer, development costs need to be driven downward as to not scare off budding developers, and the hardware should not cost you 2-3 paychecks.

Mmmm this is the most important thing. The virtual console has much more potential beyond minigames. Rebirth of 2D, anyone? I want to see 2D epic adventures, high-tech 3D minigames, everything inbetween, and beyond. Because it's possible now. Nintendo's own teams making downloadable games? I wonder how much resources they'll be putting into them vs the 'main' disc-based games. And here's hoping Nintendo will take from Microsoft's book and have their Virtual Console open to indie developers, not just publishers.

I prefer memory cards over hard drives as saving devices. That way you can easily transport them around to a friend's house or something. I think it would be one hell of a great idea to be able to download games from the revolution, then save them onto memory cards the size of NES/SNES/N64 cartridges to play on those consoles, and it might even convince Nintendo to continue production of older games consoles. Also, it could mean that small companies could make 'less advanced' games and still get a profit.
For example, Nintendo could make a brand new SMB NES game, allow it to be downloaded onto the revolution, then allow it to be copied to a NES sized memory card, and then could be played on the NES without wasting space on the Revolution. It could be a sort-of 'reward' for those who bought Nintendo consoles within the last 20 years, and now don't know what to do with them.
Actually, I think that would be the awesomest idea that Nintendo could have, especially if with the Mega Drive and Turbografx support.

As cheap as this is, this might caue trouble for them. It's hard to admit, but alot more people want the 360 than the Rev (This doesn't include me BTW, I'm dying for the Rev), and alot more people+Higher costs=Bigger profit. ALOT bigger profit. Hopefully many people here will still get the Revolution, but we all know it will be a huge success in Japan probably so I doubt it will stop Nintendo.
Also, this is not a complaint. I'm all for low prices, but I'm afraid that if they go below 45 at LEAST, then Nintendo might go boom. Then no more Zelda, Mario, Metroid, ect. ;_;
