While whoever written this review is entitled to his opinion (I don't particularly like people calling someone's opinion "idiotic" under any circumstances, really), I think a lot of reviews should maybe not just be done by one person. The reviews should maybe be based on what all the review staff thought of a game while someone writes up their general views into the review as opposed to it being a singular vision of the game.

I've never been a huge fan of IGN reviews, they go all over the place.
Gamespot for the win pls. Hell, they at least make sense..

I prefer Eurogamer reviews myself, although they don't have reviews for as many games as the bigger sites like IGN.

I don't think Gamestop playing S2's "Savage" for 15 minutes (their game logs the time you play, offline and online) and then writing a negative review from that experience makes a whole lot of sense. They didn't think so either, they had to pull that review.

Neither does them giving Tetris a 7.5 because "the game assumes you like old Nintendo games" or them giving Metroid Hunters bad ratings because the online multiplayer options aren't customizeable (which they are, and they had to revise their review several times before they could get it right, and after all the revisions their score stayed the same).

I REALLY want to play the KH series, but I don't have a Playstation. I loved the GBA one, though and I already knew the story from the first one through the strategy guide (bought for drawing references).

And yeah, IGN reviews suck yadda yadda. I remember reading in their Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge review that the score (6.2 or something) was based only on a demo of a couple levels. Since when is a game's review based on a DEMO?

EDIT: Looking back at the review, it doesn't say anything, but I could've sworn it said that when they first reviewed it.

IGN is full of douchebags. This also applies to Gamespot, EGM, Game Informer and pretty much every other game review media--it's all opinion-based and more times than not a reviewer will just act on that rather than taking into consideration how other people would like or dislike a game. To them, if they disliked their gaming experience, then BAD EXPERIENCE = BAD GAME. Or vice-versa.

Games Radar is pretty good biggrin.gif.

Agreed. Sid sounds like some southern, confederate general. Aeris' voice is just completely lifeless, however.

I generally don't give much weight to professionally-written reviews. I tend to check as many user scores as possible and only bother to read the user reviews to get specific details about the game (and also to see if the person who wrote it was a blithering idiot whose score shouldn't be considered anyway or if they actually justified their opinions).

EDIT: I mean when I'm looking at reviews trying to decide if I should buy a game.

I think he meant bad experience as in the editor "loses" at the game or is generally frustrated by it, or it's just not his genre. In that case there probably would be some heavy bias, but I think it's interesting to read the negative reviews regardless.

Negative reviews provoke people (as obviously seen here) to support the game in the face of potential flaws, which helps potential buyers who actually research a game find out which flaws hold merit and which ones don't. And if a review of a game strikes upon a negative aspect that nobody is able to redeem, then you know that review holds some accuracy and could be used as a genuine influence for your purchase decision.

And considering the return policies of some retailers, you'd be crazy to rent a game when you could buy it and get a full refund if you didn't like it.

Actually, any retailer that does that is breaking the "rules".

The policy on video games is that once they're opened, you can only exchange the game for the same game. No refund cashwise.

Yeah, but stores such as SEARS don't proudly parade their return policy, or are just lousy in enforcing them. Specialty stores like Gamestop and EB Games enforce the store credit way too often though.

Besides, being a "demon consumer" is better than being a sucker who bought Crash vs. Daxter 7. cool2.gif

EDIT: And if you're really feeling cheap, you can always play the defective card.

When I played the defective card, they told me I could only exchange it for the same game.

But meh. It's my fault for purchasing it. :P

I guess that'll become more common as people try to abuse the system.

That leaves pestering specialty game shops to demo the game for you as our only free option!

Really, a 7.4 isn't THAT bad of a rating is it?

If you compare it to the other games that they've given the same grade, or games that they've given slightly higher grades to, then yes, it really is. Some really bad games usually get around 7 as their grade, and even at some times, they get at least up to eight. Also, the fact that the reviewer said the game is better than the first, and yet the first got a 9 as its rating. Also, the subtitle for the review is "Production values through the roof, gameplay through the floor", it makes it sound like you shouldn't even get near the game.

Standards change over time. Gamespot gave MP2 a 9.1 and said it was better than the original (9.7 I think).
